Onions for Autism Veggies for Vets garden program was established in 2013. The Academy needed a place to teach life -lessons and a place where people could go to connect and become empowered by working with the soil to grow food. Many of the skills learned by working in the garden can be transferred to later employment, social settings and independence.
With the help of invested volunteers, we are capable of meeting the needs of our diverse community. Many students and veterans work side-by-side at raised garden-beds to work the soil and to socialize. Students learn how to use the soil to bring food to their kitchens for tasty meals and how to sell or donate the surplus. Many times, at the end of the day the garden’s Pizza Oven is fired up and the vegetables are used for meals.
